HMAS Canberra becomes a spectacular dive site in Port Phillip Bay
In September Parks Victoria, together with contractor Bidon and Dive Victoria will orchestrate the scuttling of ex navy warship,HMAS Canberra off Ocean Grove.
It has been a long process of negotiation with the Federal Government but at long last the de-commisioned guided missile Frigate will sit in the waters between Ocean Grove and Port Arlington in a special dive site known as the Ships'Graveyard.
This artificial reef contains 46 other wrecks that are popular with divers. The Canberra however, is a super large wreck and its masts and towers have been left in tact which will offer divers a spectacular site on the sea bed.
It is estimated that divers will need at least 30 - 40 dives before they have seen the whole of the ship.
Members'Day
As part of our September Members'Day activities we have decided to do a trip out to the HMAS Canberra - weather permitting we will set off at 9.00am from Anchorage Marina Williamstown to the Ocean Grove dive site. Date to be confirmed.
Snapper Run
It's that time of the year when keen fishermen drag out their tackle boxes and service their rods.
It is spring and the time when thousands of Snapper head through the rip and into Port Phillip Bay.
No one is actually sure when the migration will happen but when fishermen start seeing Snapper at Torquay, Apollo Bay and Ocean Grove it's a good indication that schools will not be far away from the bay.
Lots of keen anglers will have already fished for their bait, salmon, squid, garfish and small barracouta and be ready for any signs of reds.
Snapper generally move down the eastern seaboard from Point Lonsdale, to places as far afield as Mornington, Altona and Black Rock.
Generally by October they will be schooling off Carrum, St Kilda and Williamstown.
When the schools are nearby at St Kilda and Williamstown there is no excuse for not taking the Mustang or the Bayliner out for some fantastic fishing.
We even know an avid angler who might be persuaded to supply some GPS coordinates for the most likely spots off Williamstown.
